Class-action suit accuses Coors of bogus sweepstakes entries

October 7, 2009

A class action federal lawsuit was filed Wednesday against Coors and Miller beers on behalf of more than 100 people who were allegedly issued invalid codes for an ongoing sweepstakes.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court, claims the companies began “The Coors Light Silver Ticket Sweepstakes” on Aug. 1 to increase sales of its products but incorrectly issued invalid codes, which did not allow consumers to enter the sweepstakes.

The sweepstakes began on Aug. 1, and is scheduled to continue until Oct. 31, according to the suit. The grand prize is two tickets to a 2009 regular-season NFL game and the first prize is $100 NFLShop.com gift certificate.

About five million tickets containing invalid codes were issued and seven hundred complaints from across the country were called in via a customer service line and through various Web sites, the suit said.

The suit claims labeling and packaging of Coors products have and continue to deceive consumers by promoting a contest in which consumers cannot enter to win or are given invalid codes, the suit claims.

The suit was filed by Mario Aliano, on behalf of at least 100 others, against Molsen Coors Brewing Co., Miller Coors, LLC and Miller Brewing Company.

The six-count suit seeks class action status, damages in the form of restitution and injunctive relief, as well as attorney fees and any other additional relief.

Note: Attorney Thomas Zimmerman filed the class action lawsuit on behalf of the plaintiff’s class.
